Border Remains Generally Calm, Says Lieutenant General Maly Socheata

PHNOM PENH, August 11, 2025 — The Ministry of National Defense of Cambodia has issued a strong statement regarding recent developments along the Cambodia-Thailand border, emphasizing the importance of respecting the ongoing ceasefire and promoting peaceful dialogue.

Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense, stated during the brief morning press conference that "the border remains generally calm." She expressed concern over provocative actions allegedly undertaken by Thai military personnel. Specifically, Commander of Military Region 2, Lieutenant General Boonsin Padklang, announced his pre-retirement plan, which reportedly includes controversial intentions such as seizing Takrabei Temple from Cambodian control and declaring the closure of Ta Moan Thom Temple — both within Cambodia’s sovereignty. These actions are characterized by the Cambodian authorities as serious provocations and premeditated violations of territorial integrity.

Cambodia reiterates its unwavering commitment to seeking a peaceful resolution to the dispute. "We emphasize our firm stance in adhering to the principles of peace, maintaining the ceasefire, and fostering dialogue to end tensions," Lt. Gen. Socheata stated. "We hope that Thailand will also honor this commitment in good faith to facilitate a complete resolution, restore peace, and allow our people to coexist in harmony."

The Ministry further appealed to the international community and partner countries involved in peace efforts to exert influence on Thailand. "We call on the international community, especially our partners who have been dedicated to upholding the ceasefire, to strongly urge Thailand to respect the ceasefire agreement through concrete actions. This includes stopping all violations and removing illegally placed barbed wire from Cambodian territory," Lt. Gen. Socheata urged.

Regarding the overall situation, she emphasized that efforts should focus on maintaining and enhancing stability. "The situation at the border remains calm, and the goal must be to improve this situation rather than to take actions that hinder peace and normalcy," she said. "This is what our people desire and what the international community supports, as evidenced by the widespread congratulations and backing for the recent successful Cambodia-Thailand Border Committee meeting."

Cambodia remains committed to diplomatic channels and calls for continued cooperation to restore and sustain peace and stability along the border region.
